Youth Forum on the East African Integration Process (FoY-EACIP) at the Institute of Accountancy Arusha

In a resounding effort to bolster youth engagement and foster deeper integration within the East African Community (EAC), the Fungua Trust recently convened a seminal forum at the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA) in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. Spearheaded by the esteemed Rt. Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana, Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), the event, held on April 27, 2024, served as a platform to empower graduating students with comprehensive insights into the EAC Integration Process and avenues for active participation to enhance the regional economy.

At the heart of the discussion was the resolution passed by the EALA in March 2024 to establish a dedicated Youth Caucus, signaling a monumental step towards addressing youth concerns within the EAC. The initiative aims to provide a robust framework for amplifying youth voices and priorities within the regional parliament.

Hon. Dr. Shogo Mlozi-Sedoyeka, Founder and CEO of the Fungua Trust, underscored the pivotal role of youth in driving the EAC’s mission forward, citing their significant representation, comprising over 65% of the regional population. Emphasizing the trust’s commitment to youth empowerment, Dr. Mlozi-Sedoyeka elucidated on Fungua’s core focus on nurturing youth leadership and participation in regional development initiatives.

Ms. Caroline Mugalla, Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Country Office for EAC, emphasized the imperative of meaningful youth engagement in decision-making processes, particularly in matters concerning youth employment programs. Her remarks underscored the importance of inclusive policies that address the evolving needs and aspirations of East Africa’s burgeoning youth population.

Mr. John Kalisa, CEO of the East African Business Council (EABC), highlighted the necessity for youth to acquire diverse skill sets to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape, advocating for proactive measures to prevent youth disengagement and unemployment.

Prof. Sedoyeka, Rector of the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA), shed light on the institute’s concerted efforts in skill-building to equip graduates with the competencies required to meet the demands of the labor market effectively.

The forum witnessed active participation from over 300 students from IAA, underscoring the burgeoning enthusiasm among the youth to actively contribute to the regional integration agenda.

As the Fungua Trust continues its steadfast commitment to youth empowerment and regional integration, it remains poised to catalyze transformative change and drive sustainable development across the East African Community.
